What Ethanol Fuel Actually Does to a Small Engine
Walk into any mower repair shop and mention ethanol, and you will get an opinion. Usually a strong one, usually involving the phrase ruining everything. The frustration is real and the failures are real, but the explanation that gets passed around is mostly wrong, and that matters because it leads people to the wrong solutions.
Ethanol does not attack your engine. It attacks your fuel, and then your fuel attacks your engine.

What Is Actually in the Tank
Most petrol sold today is E10, meaning up to ten percent ethanol blended with ninety percent petrol. Higher blends such as E15 and E85 exist and are sold at some forecourts, and those genuinely are unsuitable for small engines. But the fuel most people are putting in a mower is E10, and E10 is what small engine manufacturers have designed around for well over a decade.
So the notion that E10 is inherently corrosive to a modern mower engine does not hold up. Manufacturers specify it. Warranties cover it. The seals and fuel lines fitted to any machine made this century are compatible with it.
The problem is not the chemistry of the fuel on the day you buy it. The problem is what that fuel becomes after ninety days in a shed.
The Real Mechanism Is Water
Ethanol is hygroscopic. It pulls water vapour out of the air and holds it dissolved in the fuel. Petrol on its own does not do this in any meaningful quantity.
Up to a point this is harmless, because the water stays suspended in the mixture. Past that point, and it does not take much, the mixture reaches saturation and separates. The ethanol and water sink to the bottom of the tank as a distinct layer, and the petrol floats above it.
This is called phase separation, and it is where the actual damage begins. Your fuel pickup sits at the bottom of the tank, which means it is now drawing a corrosive water and alcohol mixture directly into the carburettor rather than fuel.

Why Cars Are Fine and Mowers Are Not
This is the part that explains everything, and it has nothing to do with engine design.

A car never gives ethanol the opportunity to do this. A mower gives it every opportunity, for months at a time, in a shed where the temperature swings enough to drive condensation cycles daily.
The same fuel behaves completely differently in the two machines, because of how the machines are used rather than how they are built.
What the Damage Looks Like
By spring you have two separate problems. There is water sitting at the pickup, which the engine will try to burn and cannot. And there is varnish in the carburettor, because the petrol that remained above the water layer has been oxidising the whole time into a sticky residue that dries into the jets.
Those jets have passages narrower than a human hair. It takes remarkably little deposit to block one completely, and once blocked the engine will crank enthusiastically and never fire. Which is precisely the symptom that convinces an owner the engine is finished, when in reality the machine needs a carburettor clean and fresh fuel.
What Actually Works
Since the mechanism is storage rather than chemistry, every effective solution addresses storage.
- Run the tank dry before storage. No fuel means no water absorption and no varnish. Free, and the most reliable option
- Use a fuel stabiliser. Stabilisers slow oxidation and help hold water in suspension. Add it to fresh fuel, not to fuel that has already been sitting
- Buy fuel more often in smaller amounts. A jerry can in the garage is doing exactly what the mower tank does
- Consider alkylate fuel for machines used rarely. It contains no ethanol and stores for years. It costs several times as much, which is easy to justify for a chainsaw used twice a year and harder for a mower used weekly
Notice what is not on that list. There is no additive that reverses phase separation once it has happened, and no fuel treatment that makes a half full tank safe to leave for six months.
The Part Nobody Mentions
Two stroke equipment deserves a separate warning. In a two stroke engine the oil is mixed into the fuel, and it is the fuel that carries lubrication to the bearings. When phase separation occurs, the oil stays with the petrol layer while the water and ethanol sink. Draw from the bottom and the engine receives a charge with effectively no lubricant in it.
On a mower, bad fuel means a machine that will not start. On a strimmer or a chainsaw, it can mean a seizure.
Where This Leaves You
Ethanol is not the villain it gets described as, but the storage habits that were harmless with older fuel are genuinely damaging with modern fuel. The equipment did not get worse. The margin for neglect got smaller.
