Choosing the Right Oil for Your Small Engine

Oil is the cheapest insurance available for a small engine and the most commonly neglected. Part of that is because the labelling is genuinely confusing, and an owner standing in front of a shelf of nearly identical bottles tends to grab whatever is nearest or skip the job entirely.

The decision is simpler than the packaging suggests.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

Every grade you see is a viscosity rating, which is a measure of how readily the oil flows.

A single grade oil such as SAE 30 has one rating, measured at operating temperature. A multigrade such as 10W30 has two. The first number with the W refers to cold flow, the W standing for winter, and the second refers to behaviour once hot. So 10W30 flows like a lighter oil on a cold start and behaves like SAE 30 once the engine is warm.

For a mower used in summer, single grade SAE 30 is the traditional answer and remains perfectly good. For equipment that runs in cold weather, such as a snow blower or a generator you might start in January, a multigrade is the better choice because it reaches the bearings faster on a cold start.

Read the Manual First

Everything above is a general guide. The manufacturer tested that specific engine and their recommendation beats any table, including this one. If you no longer have the manual, the model number stamped on the engine shroud will find it online in about a minute.

Can You Use Car Oil

Mostly yes, with one caveat that matters.

The motor oil sold for cars and the oil sold in small bottles branded for garden equipment are frequently the same specification at very different prices per litre. If a car oil meets the viscosity grade and the service classification the engine manual asks for, it will work.

The caveat is modern low friction car oils. Many are formulated with reduced levels of zinc and phosphorus additives to protect catalytic converters. Small engines have no catalytic converter and they do have flat tappet valve trains that benefit from those additives. For an older air cooled engine, an oil that still carries a healthy additive package is the better choice.

Synthetic or Mineral

Synthetic oil resists breaking down at high temperature better than mineral oil, and small air cooled engines run hot. On a machine you intend to keep for many years, synthetic is a genuine improvement and the extra cost per change is small.

On a budget mower approaching the end of its life, the difference will not be what decides its fate. Changing mineral oil on schedule is far more valuable than using synthetic and forgetting about it.

Two Stroke Is a Completely Different Question

If your equipment mixes oil into the fuel, none of the above applies. Two stroke engines need oil specifically formulated to burn, mixed at the ratio the manufacturer specifies, usually somewhere between 40 to 1 and 50 to 1.

Getting this wrong is not a slow decline, it is a seizure. Too little oil and the bearings fail quickly. Too much and you foul plugs and build carbon deposits. Measure it rather than estimating, and mix in a clean container rather than in the tank.

How Often to Change It

The usual guidance is every fifty running hours or once a season, whichever comes first. For most domestic lawns that works out at once a year.

Two situations shorten that interval considerably. A brand new engine should have its first change after the first five hours, because the break in period produces metal particles that you want out of the system rather than circulating. And any engine working in dusty conditions needs changing more often, because dust that gets past the air filter ends up suspended in the oil as an abrasive.

  1. Run the engine for two or three minutes so the oil is warm and carries more contamination with it
  2. Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug cap
  3. Drain fully, either through the drain plug or by tipping with the filler facing down
  4. Refit the plug, refill slowly to the mark on the dipstick, and no further
  5. Check the level with the engine on flat ground and the dipstick seated properly

When to Do It

Autumn, before storage, rather than spring. Used oil is acidic and leaving it sitting against bearing surfaces through winter causes avoidable corrosion, which is why the oil change appears in our mower winterising guide rather than the spring startup list.

The other habit worth adopting is buying the right oil once and keeping it with the machine. Most skipped oil changes are not a decision, they are what happens when the correct oil is not to hand on the day you have twenty spare minutes.
